The Definition

What does “real-time” actually mean?

Real-time odds are betting prices that are recalculated as new match information becomes available. A goal, red card, injury, break point, timeout, momentum shift or major change in game state can cause a market to move within moments.

The term describes how quickly betting prices react to live events. It does not mean the odds remain available every second. Sportsbooks may temporarily suspend a market while an important event is being confirmed, then reopen it with a new price.

This guide explains how real-time odds work from a bettor and operator perspective. For implementation details, see the Live Odds API. For the commercial operator product, see Sportsbook Real-Time Odds.

Why Odds Move

What causes real-time odds to change?

Live betting prices react to changes in match state, time remaining, player performance, market exposure and other information that changes the probability of an outcome.

1. Match Events

Goals, cards, penalties, injuries, breaks of serve, timeouts and other live events can immediately change the probability of an outcome and therefore the available odds.

2. Time & Game State

The same score can produce very different prices depending on how much time remains, possession, set or period, field position and other sport-specific conditions.

3. Market & Risk Conditions

Sportsbooks can also adjust prices because of liability, trading decisions or temporary uncertainty. During high-impact moments, a market may be suspended before reopening at a new price.

Understanding Live Markets

How real-time odds behave during a match.

Real-time prices are dynamic. These four examples explain what players and operators typically see while an event is in progress.

01

Price Changes

When the probability of an outcome rises, its odds generally shorten; when the probability falls, the odds generally drift. The size of the movement depends on the market and the importance of the event.

02

Market Suspension

A sportsbook may temporarily stop accepting bets when a decisive event is occurring or data is uncertain. Once the event is confirmed, the market can reopen with recalculated odds.

03

Different Markets Move Differently

Match winner, handicap, totals and player markets do not react in exactly the same way. A single goal, for example, can affect the 1X2 market and total-goals market by very different amounts.

04

Pre-Match vs Live Pricing

Pre-match odds are based on information available before the event begins. Real-time odds incorporate what has already happened in the match. See our Pre-Match vs Live Odds guide for a deeper comparison.

Frequently Asked

Questions about real-time odds.

What operators and traders ask most often when evaluating a real-time pricing provider.

What does real-time odds mean? +

Real-time odds are betting prices that update as a live event changes. They reflect new information such as goals, cards, points, injuries, time remaining and other changes in game state.

Why are live betting markets sometimes suspended? +

Markets are commonly suspended when an important event is happening or when the sportsbook needs to confirm new information. This prevents bets from being accepted on prices that may no longer reflect the state of the match.

Are real-time odds available for every sport? +

Live pricing can be offered across many sports, but the number of markets and update frequency depend on the quality of event data, the sport itself and the sportsbook’s trading model. Operators can review broader coverage through our Odds Feed Solution.

Why do real-time odds change so quickly? +

Live odds can move quickly because the probability of an outcome may change quickly. A goal, penalty, red card, break point or late-game possession can have a large effect on the expected result.

What’s the difference between real-time odds and live odds? +

“Live odds” usually refers to betting markets offered while an event is in progress. “Real-time odds” emphasizes how frequently those live prices are updated as the event changes. The terms are often used together, but they describe slightly different ideas.

How can an operator integrate real-time odds? +

Developers can use the Live Odds API for technical real-time market delivery. Operators that need the wider wagering workflow can use the Sportsbook API, while the Sportsbook Real-Time Odds page covers the commercial real-time pricing product.

How are real-time odds delivered to betting platforms? +

Real-time odds can be delivered through streaming connections such as WebSocket, while REST interfaces are commonly used for snapshots and related event data. See the Live Odds API for WSGaming’s technical integration layer.

Where can I learn about WSGaming’s commercial real-time odds product? +

Visit our Sportsbook Real-Time Odds page for the operator-focused product, or the Sportsbook API page if you need odds together with the broader betting lifecycle.
