Pre-MatchvsLive Odds — Two Markets, One Sportsbook.
Same match, two completely different betting products. Pre-match odds are set hours ahead and rarely move; live odds shift second by second as the game plays out. This guide breaks down how each works, when they pay better, and why operators on the WS Gaming sportsbook platform run both. Built on the same engine as our sportsbook real-time odds feed.
Two markets, one match.
Pre-match odds are the prices a sportsbook sets before a match starts — typically published hours or days in advance. They’re built from historical data, team form, lineup news, weather, and the trader’s read on public sentiment. Once posted, they only move significantly when news breaks or money piles up on one side.
Live odds — also called in-play odds — are the prices that update continuously while the match is being played. They reflect what’s happening right now: the current score, time remaining, possession, momentum, and the AI engine’s view of who’s likely to win from this exact state. WS Gaming operators offer both from the same back-office, drawing on our sports betting software stack.
Bettors choose between them based on what they’re trying to do. Operators offer both because each one captures a different kind of player and a different kind of turnover. This page covers the trade-offs.
How the two markets actually compare.
The differences go deeper than “before” versus “during.” Pricing methodology, market depth, settlement speed, and risk profile all change.
Pre-Match Odds— set before kickoff
- Pricing windowSet hours to days before kickoff using statistical models, form data, and trader judgment.
- Price movementSlow. Moves on news (injuries, lineups) or heavy market action. Mostly stable.
- Market depthDeepest — 100+ markets per match including outrights, futures, exotic props, and specials.
- Margin profileLower margins per bet, higher volumes. Sharp money lives here.
- Bettor typeResearchers, value bettors, accumulator players, casual fans planning ahead.
Live Odds— update during the match
- Pricing windowUpdated every few hundred milliseconds based on real-time AI model output.
- Price movementConstant. Every goal, card, possession swing reprices the line.
- Market depthUp to 10 live markets per event — match winner, handicap, totals, next goal, BTTS, more.
- Margin profileHigher margins per bet, higher engagement, larger session turnover.
- Bettor typeReactive bettors, second-screen players, momentum chasers, micro-bet enthusiasts.
Picking the right market.
Pre-match and live each have moments where they make obvious sense. Smart bettors and smart operators recognize the pattern.
Pre-Match is Better When…
You’ve researched the matchup, have a data-backed thesis, or want to lock in odds before lineup news leaks. Best for accumulators, futures, and high-stake singles with planning behind them. Available on every white label sportsbook we deploy.
Live is Better When…
You’re watching the match, can read momentum the AI model hasn’t fully priced in yet, or spot a value drift when a favorite goes behind early. Reactive bettors get their edge from being faster than the line. Powered by our odds feed solution.
Use Both When…
You want to hedge or arbitrage. Lock a pre-match position, then trade the live market as the game unfolds — a strategy real traders use to lock in value regardless of outcome. Operators love it because turnover doubles.
Why your sportsbook needs both markets live.
Pre-match alone captures planners; live alone captures reactors. Run both and you capture the same player twice — once before kickoff, again during the match.
Modern bettors don’t split themselves cleanly into “pre-match player” and “in-play player.” The same person who bets a 4-fold accumulator on Saturday morning is the one cashing out leg 3 at halftime and reloading on live correct-score for leg 4.
If your platform forces them to switch operators between markets, you lose half their session. That’s why every WS Gaming-powered sportsbook runs both on one wallet — pre-match and live, settled in the same place, priced by the same engine. It’s also why our real-time odds infrastructure is built to handle both pricing modes in one feed.
The operational cost of running both is marginal once you have the infrastructure. The upside in turnover and retention is not.

Common questions about pre-match vs live.
What bettors and operators ask most often when deciding which markets to bet — or offer.
Are live odds always better value than pre-match? +
No. Live odds have higher margins per bet on average, which means worse value for the bettor unless they have a real reactive edge. Pre-match lines, especially in liquid leagues, are sharper because they’ve been priced longer and seen more money. Sharp bettors mostly play pre-match; reactive bettors play live.
Why do live odds change so fast? +
Three reasons. The match state changes (score, time, possession), the AI model recomputes probability, and market flow nudges the line. All three run continuously. Our real-time odds engine ships new prices within 400ms of any of those triggers.
Can I bet both pre-match and live on the same match? +
Yes. On any modern sportsbook including the WS Gaming platform, pre-match and live markets coexist for the same event. Many bettors deliberately stack — taking a pre-match position, then trading it via the live market as the game unfolds.
Which has more markets — pre-match or live? +
Pre-match has deeper market coverage (100+ for a major football match including specials and futures). Live offers fewer markets (up to 10 simultaneously) but they update in real time. Different products for different bettors.
How are pre-match odds set in the first place? +
Statistical models seed the opening line — team form, head-to-head, home advantage, recent results. Then traders adjust based on lineup news, injuries, weather, and market sentiment. The same models continue running for live, but with live event data as input. Detailed in our sports betting software documentation.
Why do live odds get suspended sometimes? +
The risk engine pauses markets during critical, fast-changing moments — penalty kicks, video reviews, injury stoppages. Reopens once the situation resolves with a fresh price. Better than serving stale odds and leaking margin.
Is the technology to offer both the same? +
The data pipeline is shared, but live demands much more from the pricing engine and the front-end. Most legacy platforms can serve pre-match well but struggle with real-time live. Our odds feed solution is built for both from the ground up.
As an operator, can I launch with just one and add the other later? +
Yes, but most operators launch with both from day one — there’s no meaningful cost saving in launching pre-match-only, and you’d be giving up half your potential turnover. Talk to our team about the launch path that fits your market.
